What did you take from the Ted talks?
Here are some inspiring Ted talks for teachers :)
1) Hey Science Teachers -- Make it Fun
The first video is from a wonderful science teacher who understands that even reading about science can and should be engaging. Everyone loves a story and young learners are especially captivated by a story. I personally loved his story of bacteria virus espionage and I can imagine students listening intently and learning from it. So I love the idea of making science into stories. I appreciate that he says, I'm paraphrasing, that it's not dumbing it down it's just making it more understandable. I have used dance to explain scientific concepts to my students, but I will have to add this science story telling to my bag of tricks.
2) Math Class Needs a Makeover
I love that this math teacher wants to fight "impatient problem solving". Creating "patient problem solving" seems so key in a society that is all about having everything right now and a society that gets impatient when a webpage takes a few extra SECONDS to load. I will admit I am one of these impatient people. I love how he broke the slope problem down into those smaller parts, to really get students to think and use math reasoning. The grocery line question he talks about (I found his blog version of it here) really got me thinking about which I would choose and why.
3) How to Fix a Broken School? Lead Fearlessly, Love Hard
This principal knows what's important. I love her "So what, now what? What are we going to do about it?" slogan to stop with the excuses and figure out what to do. Her "If nobody told you they loved you today, you remember I do, and I always will" is sooooo important because every needs to know they are loved and relationships are at the core of teaching.

I love organization, but I find staying organized is sometimes a battle. So I love anything that makes staying organized easier. To help me stay organized, I made myself a computer desktop organizer for home and school. They has really helped me to keep my icons organized and easily find what I need quickly.
But hey why just keep my desktop organizers to myself. So I decided that I will be selling them in my TPT store. You will be able to organize your desktop with lovely photograph backgrounds (example is second picture above) or pattern backgrounds (example is first picture above).
I know what I like for my own desktop organizer, but what would you like? So I asking for some help...but in return you have a chance to win two custom desktop organizers. You will get one for home and one for work. Simply read the question posted in the blog that day and enter your answer into the rafflecopter. A new question will be posted each day. Now for Question 1... 1) Do you prefer MostlyMono or TheDenealieApple font? Mostly Mono

Today I am linking up with Hanging Around in Primary for My best back to school tip is to number your students from day one. Look at your class list and number students, starting with the first student on the list, from one to the total number of students. BUT WHY? Well, I use my numbering system in soooooo many ways. From the first day of school they learn their number. I put their name AND number on their name plate and agenda. I also put their number on the themed pencil I give them on the first day (so they for sure all have a pencil). After colour coordinating their duotangs (aka pronged folders) ***ANOTHER MUST IN MY BOOKS!!!!*** I also put their number on them. Now if any of their items get lost they can easily find their home, no matter if they are just a lonely pencil. Another reason I number duotangs is for me. It makes it easy to pick them up by calling their number or having students hand them in number order to bucket and quickly seeing which are missing. Students love to help put them in order for me too :) another bonus. I also number notebooks for the same reasons. All textbooks are also numbered with removable circle stickers from the Dollar Store. Although they are removable, I don't find students peeling them off and most have stayed on for three years. **They are a great purchase for a buck in my books**. Numbering textbooks makes for easy pacing out and collecting. At the end of the year it is soooo easy to see who didn't hand their textbook in yet. When we write on anything they put their Name#, Date. We also say it as a chant "Name, #, Date" to remind students to include those. Same great organization reasons as my duotangs and notebooks. I also have them line up in number order, EVERY SINGLE TIME----CONSISTENCY makes a teacher's life so much easier. This helps me to easily see who is missing from our line and helps students to line up very quickly. They also sit at assembly in this order, although in two lines, which means I can take attendance without a class list right then and there. I just started using book baskets last year and I love, love, love them. By numbering these instead of putting names I can reuse them year after year. This will be my second year with them and I only have to replace two.
I do use numbering in fun ways too. Kids love the random number pickers online, which makes picking students for things like presenting order or making random groups quick and easy. I also LOVE The Great Pencil Challenge from LadyBugsTeacherFiles and so have my students. ***If you don't know what that is click the link and change your life! Haha a bit dramatic, but really it's awesome.*** Want to link up too or see more tips? Click the "My Best Back To School Tip" picture at the start of the post. Thanks for stopping by :) |
